“There’s not a lot of volleyball players, and most definitely setters, that have so many skill sets that they can impact the game in a lot of different ways,” Sheffield said last month. “She’s a really good server, she’s an elite defensive player, a very good blocker, a very skilled setter. She can attack very well. She’s deceptive. She reads the game. She’s got a lot of tools for her age that she brings to the equation, and she’s hungry enough that she wants to keep getting better. That was a big day when she committed.”

Fuerbringer comes from a family devoted to volleyball. Her mother, Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer, was an All-American setter at Long Beach State who led the 49ers to the NCAA championship in 1993, beating Penn State in the finals held at the UW Field House. Her father, Matt Fuerbringer, was a four-time All-American at Stanford, where he is the career leader in kills and was a member of the 1997 national champions. He is an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team. They are club directors at Mizuno Long Beach, the club where Charlie plays.
